Wire Raw
Sterling Silver and Gold-Filled wire, as well as fine silver,
argentium silver, brass, copper and nickel wire, for Wire-Wrapping.
Order by type of metal, by gauge and by the ounce for silver,
fine silver, argentium silver and gold-filled, or by
the pound for copper, brass and nickel. The
"larger" the gauge number, the thinner the wire.
Wire is available in three shapes: round, half round,
and square. An approximate feet/ounce or feet/pound
estimate is provided.
Wire comes as "hard", "half-hard" and "dead-soft".
We have found the "hard" to be too difficult to work with in wire-wrapping.
We prefer "half hard", and provide that where we can.
When "half hard" is unavailable, we offer "dead soft".
Use brass or copper wire to "practice" your techniques
and designs.
At Land of Odds, we wire-wrap crystals and stones, and occasionally
make rings and bracelets. The gauges we use most often are
20 and 22. It usually takes 9"-12" of wire to wire-wrap a
1 1/2"-2" crystal or stone.
When we make Y-Necklaces by creating chains of beads, we typically
use 24 gauge wire.
18-gauge and thicker wires more easily keep their shapes, when
jewelry is worn. If you use an 18-gauge or thicker jump ring, for
example, it is unlikely to open up. However, most beads have a .8mm
hole size which is too small for 18-gauge which is 1mm thick.
"Regular" thickness head pins and eye pins usually
refers to 20 gauge. "Extra Thin" usually refers to 22-gauge.
"Ultra Thin" usually refers to 24-gauge and thinner.
To make any of these wires harder, you can do any of these
things:
- keep one end secure, and grab the other end with a pliers or vice,
and twist
- hammer
- bend
To straighten any of these wires, grab each end with a
pliers or vice and pull the ends in opposite directions.
WIG
JIGS

We
carry two models of wig-jigs that are specifically for designing
wire jewelry components. Useful with 18-, 20- and 22-gauge wire.
The
DELPHI model is a square hole pattern.
The CENTAUR is a combined square hole pattern and round hole pattern.
With
the square hole pattern only, you will be unable to make a 30 or
60 degree angle. These angles are part of an equilateral triangle.
This would make creating a star pattern difficult, for example.

ARGENTIUM
SILVER
(.925
silver)
Containing more germanium
than traditional sterling silver alloys, Argentium silver is
virtually tarnish-free. Customers will appreciate the value and
convenience
of beautifully
sparkling jewelry that requires far less polishing than sterling
silver. Ideal for all types of jewelry items.
The wire is a little stiffer than
comparable sterling silver wire.

Colored Copper Wire
(plated over copper)
Perfect for jewelry design, wire art, sculpture, pottery and
crafts.
This is the highest quality permanently colored copper wire
available from the wire industry to date. No other offers the resistance
to scratching, peeling and marring. This is due to the special enameling
process used to coat over the 30 plus colors we offer. After the
enamel is applied, the wire is clear coated to prevent tarnishing.
Artistic Wire is available in an ever-growing selection of gauges

Craft wire is available in several electroplated colors and
gauges, in round, half round, twisted and square.
The base wire is steel (or a brass alloy of steel).
Craft wire is available in two qualities -- Good and Best
(see plated copper wire above).
The generic Craft Wire in this section is considered a Good Quality.
On the best quality, the finish adheres better and longer
to the base wire, which is copper, and the wire is a little easier
to work with. We recommend using the best quality
wires for finished jewelry projects.
We do not recommend this generic
Craft Wire for finished jewelry projects. This wire is good for
practice. It is good for creating something stationery, like a beaded
Christmas ornament. This does not hold up well for jewelry.
Size 11 seed beads work well with 28 and 24 gauge, not
20 gauge wire. Most 4mm,
6mm, 8mm and larger glass beads will slip the 20-gauge wire.
Some of the 8mm and larger Czech glass, and most of the East India
glass beads will slip up to 18-gauge wire.
Craft Wire is a good quality wire for craft uses.
Silver, copper and colored wires are covered with anti-tarnish
colors and coatings. Gold wire is jeweler’s brass with an anti-tarnish
coating. Made in the USA.
Not all colors are available in all gauges.

We
carry two models of wig-jigs that are specifically for designing

The

The CENTAUR is a combined square hole pattern and round hole pattern.
With
the square hole pattern only, you will be unable to make a 30 or

This would make creating a star pattern difficult, for example.
