Think carefully about:

o The Overall Hideousness of the Piece

o The degree you thought the designer had a strategic control over the necklace's design. They either had a high degree of control, were only intuitive, or were lucky (thus, clueless).

o Although you may not be caught dead wearing the necklace yourself, some sense of the wearability and functionality of the necklace as a piece of jewelry

o How well the designer interrelates his or her poem to their necklace and its design

o How clever the designer was in the choice and placement of materials

It's not easy to do Ugly!

Our 6 distinguished judges associated with The Center for Beadwork & Jewelry Arts reviewed 58 Ugly Necklace submissions to our contest, and selected 10 semi-finalists. They rated each necklace using 10 jewelry design criteria. They examined the overall hideousness of the necklace, how well the accompanying poem elaborated on the necklace and its ugliness, and how the design of the necklace violated design rules associated with color, form, balance and focus. They also looked at issues of how the necklace was constructed and its wearability.

The Winner receives a first prize of a $992.93 shopping spree on the Land of Odds web-site (www.landofodds.com), and the Runner-Up receives a prize of a $399.07 shopping spree on the web-site.

Please vote for that Ugly Necklace that you think shows the most Beading/Jewelry Making design talent among our semi-finalists!

And consider submitting an entry to next year's The Second Annual Ugly Necklace Contest! Entries accepted beginning Sept 1, 2003, with the final entry submission date of Mar 15, 2004.
