Equus Recyclus
"From
the horse's ass ,
Much manure does pass.
The
pasture's seed becomes an organic bead,
Made from the horse's dirty deed.
There
must be more uses,
For what the horse produces. ... "

Song
of the Venerable Bede
"The
New Age Market has decreed
there be more Spirit in their beads.
No more sufficient, ostentation;
they now require extrapolation
From world relitions to their jewelry
which tempts designers to buffoonery.
This
ugly necklace is evidence
of a bauble fraught with such mystical defense.

Something for Everyone
"It
doesn't matter who you are --
Rapper, diva or parade star.
If you're artsy-fartsy or sedate,
A Goth, a pimp or just out-of-date;
A hippi chick or a sports fan
A sk8rgrrl or Elizabethan
It doesn't matter who you are,
There's something here for you!"

An Ode To My Ugly Necklace
My so-called "ugly nekclace"
has quite grown on me.
It's hideousness bewitching.
Clumsy - yes.
Awkward - a bit.
But, on my neck, a perfect fit.

Junk Drawers Revenge
"Everyone
has one
Hidden away
A drawer full of Treasures
My child would say.
...
...
But you better watch out
You better empty it someday
Before it rebels
And attacks you this way."
|

#8 by Christina
Zawadecki
Orlando,
Florida
"Beaded
soldiers on a string
March left right left for victory
Poor boys fight a rich mans war
An atrocity not to be ignored
Thoughts of all lost
Yet strong hope for a peace
A time when their mission
Is fully complete."

MindSettings
"Of
truth and beauty there is much debate,
What one person loves, another may hate.
What has value to us is another discussion,
And it can have an ugly repercussion.
Like buying diamonds even if it puts you in debt
I guess it's all about your mindset."

Sixth
Annual, 2008
The Ugly Necklace Contest
A
Jewelry Design Competition
With A Twist
Visit
the web-pages of each of our 10 The Ugly Necklace Contest Semi-Finalists.
Evaluate their images, their poem, and their materials and techniques.
Then use the on-line form you will find on each of their web-pages
to Score them in terms of Hideousness, Materials Used, Design
Principles Violated, and Artistic Control.
You can vote/evaluate each of the ten necklaces, if you want,
or just your favorites --
that's up to you. But all our artists would appreciate your
votes and evaluations.
When
voting closes, voting logs will be reviewed
for any duplicate or otherwise illegitimate votes
(for example, those from the same IP or email address),
and these will be deleted. The on-line votes will be
tallied and used to adjust the original votes of
the Panel of Judges at CBJA, in the selection of a winner.
The public's votes will weigh towards 25% of the
final tally in selecting the Winner and Runner-Up.
And
consider submitting an entry to next
year's
The Seventh Annual Ugly Necklace Contest!
Entries accepted beginning Sept 1, 2008,
with
the final entry submission date of Mar 15, 2009.
Now
entries open to both US and International submissions as well.

I Let Our Love Sing - F(orte)
"Once
upon a blowtorch an artist made a pig.
A pretty pink color, and not very big.
She took one look at him and said "Bad luck,
But your face looks like it was squashed by a truck,"
I tried my best, but this hideous creation
Will destroy my perfectionist reputation.
There's nothing I can do, you've turned out so ugly,
I'm afraid you're what lampworkers call: "A FUGLY!""

It's not easy to do Ugly!
Our
4 distinguished judges associated with
The Center for Beadwork & Jewelry Arts reviewed
37 Ugly Necklace submissions to our contest,
and selected 10 semi-finalists.
They rated each necklace using
10 jewelry design criteria. They examined the
overall
hideousness of the necklace,
how
clever were the materials used,
how
the design of the necklace violated
good jewelry design rules associated with color, form,
balance, distribution of the elements, and focus.
They
also looked at issues of
how the necklace was constructed
and its wearability, and
how
well the accompanying poem
elaborated on the necklace and its ugliness.
