ELLEN S. SUTHERLAND

My serious interest in photography as an art form began as an undergraduate in art education. My desire to experience varied art processes continues. Photography is just one means of expressing my art ideas. I believe that art is not made in a vacuum and that various art processes can enrich and inform each other.

I use alternative photographic processes in black and white and in color. I love the freedom and almost instant results of the minipulated Polaroid SX-70, image transfer and emulsion lift techniques. These Polaroid processes let me explore my favorite subjects, landscape, still life and the figure. The best part of these processes is that I can mix media and use drawing, painting and printmaking techniques in the production of the final piece. As a viewer, I look for the hand of the artist in the artwork. I think these strokes, marks and tracks are the artist's creative trail or path.

My small, alternative color photographs may seem worlds apart from the fine art black and white work of my photographic favorite, Imogen Cunningham. Nevertheless, when I am in that calm centered moment with my camera and subject, I try to remember her creative spirit and words of wisdom: "Ideas without end" and "Never give up!"

What's next on the art horizon? I am sure there will be further adventures and "ideas without end" with process and technique. An idea for a series of photo transfers on fabric with beaded embroidery embellishment is in the germination stage.

Artists interested in displaying their pieces in The Open Window Gallery should send a minimum of 10 slides or 10 .jpg files of their work to The Gallery for review. The Gallery has a panel of artists who review slides about every 2 months, and makes determinations based on (a) quality, (b) special qualities about the artist's style, (c) relationship to pieces of other artists currently on display, and (d) space availability. This panel keeps all slides/images files submitted on file, and will continually review them. Except for acknowledging receipt of artist materials, the panel does not regularly keep in touch with the artist, unless interested in showcasing that artist's work at any given time. An artist who has previously submitted materials, may update them at any time.

If sending .jpg files, make sure these image files are created in at least 300 dpi.

Examples of the kinds of pieces The Gallery showcases:

- finished necklaces, bracelets, earrings (any medium)
- pendants (which may or may not include a cord or chain)
- bead weavings, including amulet purses and bags, tapestries, jewelry
- inlay stone or glass work
- other art or craft pieces, not necessarily jewelry or beadwork, that somehow illustrates a "crafter" or "bead artist" or "jewelry artist" theme. An example is a "seamstress monkey doll".

All pieces are displayed on a consignment basis. The Gallery keeps 40% of the sales price; the Artist gets 60%. Example of Standard Consignment Agreement.
