Making Eyeglass Leashes
Eyeglass leashes are very popular, and a great item to consider
selling. All our customers who make them to sell do very well.
The string should be
20-30" long, with the most typical length as 22-24". Most people use soft flex wire
, .019 or .014 thickness.
You attach the string to eyeglass holder ends.
There are several different styles and colors of eyeglass holder
ends. None of them are perfect -- that is, none of them will
work with all styles and sizes of eyeglass frames, nor be attractive to
all customers.
We suggest that you attach the flex wire to a small split ring, and attach the split ring to the
eyeglass holder end. This allows the leash to move more naturally as the
person moves.
Some people use bigger and clunkier beads; other use very small
beads. Both styles are popular.
We also suggest that, if you want to use very small beads like
seed beads, that you consider using delicas. These line up better on the string, and give
a more finished look.
You can also make the eyeglass leashes adaptable for other
uses, such as name badge holders (BADGE
CLIPS AND OTHER CLIPS (Also
see, Swivel
Lanyard Pull )) , or necklaces. You do this
by attaching small clasps, like small lobster
claws or spring rings, to
the ends of the string of beads. These clasps then hook onto
the split rings which come off the eyeglass holder ends.
You can
also replace the coils on these eyeglass holder ends with 6mm roller
beads. These glass beads are less likely to move up and
down the cord or thong of the eyeglass end, thus creating a tighter
fit.
Our customers have found two price points for their leashes.
This is the retail price that their leashes sell for. The first is between
$20-30. The second is between $60-85. Knowing ahead of time that customers
will be willing to spend either in the lower range or higher range should
influence you in your choice of materials.
