Our Book
Shop also has several books on hemp jewelry
craft.
Nature's longest and strongest fiber is
once again being processed into natural, biodegradable twines, yarns, and
ropes. We offer 100% hemp cordage for craft and beadwork.
Hemp is becoming the fiber of choice for craftspeople who demand
quality, durability, and most importantly, environmental integrity.
Hemp is grown without pesticides or herbicides and is processed
without toxic chemicals and chlorine bleaches.
At Land of Odds, we carry Hemp Twine. A similar product is
Hemp Yarn which is great for making fuzzy items like hats and sweaters.
Twine is polished; Yarn is not.
Natural hemp is typically bleached to give it a light tan color.
When hemp is dyed, the fibers expand a bit. Thus, hemp which was
originally .5mm, would be .5-1.0mm after it is dyed. You can always take
the natural hemp and dye it any color you want using a fabric dye you can
buy in your local supermarket.
Most people buy the 1mm natural hemp.
The cord will actually vary in width from .5mm to 1.5mm, along its
length. It takes about 10 feet of hemp to make a simple hemp necklace,
so you can get about
40
necklaces
out of
a
100
gram
ball
of 1mm
hemp.
For a "clasp", people have several choices. They can simply tie the
cord into a knot. They can make a loop on one end, and tie in a lanyard
clasp (or other style clasp) in the other end. They can tie a slip knot. They can make a toggle type clasp, by creating a loop on one
side and adding a button or bead or making a large knot on the other
side.
