Dichroic Glass Beads
Dichroic glass is handmade by layering glass on top of each other to give an exciting and vivid effect of color and form. Each bead is hand-made, so sizes and designs are approximate.
Typically, a layer of dichroic glass is fused over either black or clear glass, to create the effect. Sometimes, clear glass is fused over dichroic, to get a "color-inside" effect.
Fused Glass -- Some TerminologyGlass: -- essentially a liquid that hardens into an uncrystallized state without ever becoming a true solid. A magical substance that stores and transmits vibrations. Fuse: -- to liquify by heat; melt. To join by melting together. Fused glass origins date to 2000 B.C. when the Egyptians and Romans fused many beautiful glass objects. Dichroic: -- the property of showing different colors when viewed in different directions -- as the light dances on the glass surface it changes color. Developed by NASA, dichroic glass has microscopic, thin layers of rare oxides vacuum sprayed on the glass, altering the refraction index of the spectrum, causing the light rays to bend in wonderful color play. Combining the symbols of antiquity, the ancient art of glass fusing and space age technology, these are the perfect blend of the space age present and the subtle past. The ancients would have used dichroic glass, had it been available to them. |
