COLOR CHART

Hairpipe is sold in two quality classifications --Mixed and High.    Currently, we only carry the Mixed Quality.     Beads in packages of High Quality (HQ) hairpipe are very consistent in size (width and length) and shape. These beads come from China.   Beads in packages of Mixed Quality (MQ) hairpipe will vary noticeably in size and shape.  These beads come from India.  Most of our customers -- even the clothing designers for country music stars -- settle for the mixed quality.

The horn available is water buffalo horn.  It is naturally black.  Horn can be bleached to an amber color.  Or horn can be bleached, and then died to get a red (sometimes called cherry) color. The bone hairpipe we carry is camel bone.

Jewelry designers use many materials to string hairpipe, including tigertail (.018 or greater thickness), leather, sinew.  Hairpipe will slip 1mm leather, hemp or other cord.  These are available in the Findings Shelves .

ABOUT ANTIQUING OR COLORING YOUR BONE:
To darken bone, let it sit in either tea, coffee or cola, at least for a few hours. The longer it sits in the solution, the darker it gets.
To brighten bone, let it sit in a solution of bleach (1 part) and water (7 parts).
To color bone, use a fabric dye. Bone takes dyes very well.

SKULL and SKELETON BEADS AND PIECES

Because these are hand-carved and made from natural materials, each piece will not be exactly as pictured -- the carving and sizes are approximate, as are the colors/colorations.

CARVED BONE BEADS

These beads are from either cow or camel bone.   They include decorated round and tube beads, as well as special shapes like cats, monkeys, and skulls. We carry some carved bone beads from India, and others from China.

Because these are hand-carved and made from natural materials, each piece will not be exactly as pictured -- the carving and sizes are approximate, as are the colors/colorations.

BONE PENDANTS AND PIECES

These pendants, centerpieces and miscellaneous carved objects typically are made from cow or camel bone.   The New Zealand pendant pictured above is shark bone.   In some cases, the bone is a bone-resin material. Most of our bone pendants and pieces come either from China or India.

For COLORS, scroll up this page, and see color chart under "Hairpipe" above.

Bone and Hairpipe

Land of Odds - Internet Bead Shop.  This alcove showcases bone beads and pieces.  These range from hairpipe, to plain bone beads, to carved bone beads, to skull beads, to bone pendants and other pieces.

Most bone is from cows, though some pieces, esp. pendants from east Asia, are made from camel bone.  Horn is usually from water buffalo.  This horn is black.  Black horn can be soaked in bleach to change its color to reddish (about 1 day soaking) to amber (about 4 days soaking).  Red or cherry horn hairpipe available below has been bleached, then dyed.  Natural amber horn is from sheep; this horn is expensive.
