The gold-plate darkens noticeably with age. Some styles coordinate across beads, connectors, earring hardware, charms, and clasps.

Sterling Silver Bali Beads and Jewelry Findings

Handcrafted, sterling silver beads from Bali, Indonesian are some of the finest, handcrafted metal beads.  They use techniques of granulation (applying tiny beads to the surface), applique, incision, etching and wire-wrapping.  Each bead is meticulously made.  In our Bali beads section, we have grouped them as Small-Size, Decorated Balls, Decorated Ovals and Saucers, and Decorated Miscellaneous Shapes.  In addition to beads we also have Bead Caps.  

All beads are handmade by craftsmen in Indonesia.  Each style features its own unique design.  Size and appearance may vary slightly.

You will find many bali-style beads on the market. Those from places like India and Turkey are cast copies of Bali, Indonesian beads. These beads are less durable, but also less expensive. The beads we currently carry are from Bali, Indonesia.

These beads work well in both ethnic-style pieces as well as antique, Victorian styles.  They are very collectible.

A note about gold-plate over sterling (vermeil or vermeille):   The gold plating adheres OK, but not perfectly, to sterling silver.   Where the plating has not bonded with the silver, the silver will continue to tarnish under the plating.   This can happen as quickly as 3-6 months, depending on the humidity and pollution in the air. This causes the plating to look blotchy.   On a large smooth surface, this would tend to look ugly.   However, on very decorated bali beads, this darkening of the gold-plate (vermeil) gives the bead an antique appearance.    Thus, the darkening works hand in hand with the sensibility and design of the bali-style bead.

While you may be buying the gold-plated sterling silver bali beads when they are shiny, they will all darken over time.    This happens faster in a humid and/or more polluted environment. CAUTIONARY NOTE: gold-filled beads will not darken; vermeil will. Thus, they don't necessarily mix very well in the same piece.

NOTE: The supply and availability of beads is very variable. Please make note of this when you are planning any project! Also MAKE NOTE and REALIZE that the exact color and size of many beads also varies, sometimes considerably, from production lot to production lot. Just because you ordered 100 navy blue oval beads in June, don't assume that when you re-order, that the navy blue color will be exact, or the size will be exact.

Also, don't assume that the same color will still be available when you order next -- even with a basic color like 'black'.

Also in your planning, assume that the variability of size/color/shape in any lot of hand-crafted beads will also have considerable variability.

Don't hesitate, when planning a project, or ordering from us, to ask us questions about supply and availability of beads. We'll do our best to find answers and options for you. This may mean having to modify your design plans somewhat, or for us to find an alternative, though sometimes higher cost, supplier. It may also mean buying your key beads or other parts and findings in larger quantities. At Land of Odds, we are all too familiar with the trials, tribulations and joys of jewelry design. We'll work closely with you.

Normally, we ship what is available, and out-of-stock the rest. We do not typically call or email about what is unavailable, unless specifically requested to do so.
