SSMITH8001:  Introduction to Silversmithing

SKILL SET AREA: Silversmithing
PREREQUISITES: None
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Students in this workshop will be introduced to the basics of silversmithing, including cutting and sawing, bending, piercing, filing, forming and texturing techniques, making clasps and jump rings, soldering, patination, bezel making and stone setting.
DESCRIPTION of MAJOR PROJECTS/TASKS:

1. Link necklace -- hammering, sawing, filing, jump rings and clasps, polishing, use of flexshaft tool, soldering

2. Cuff bracelet or pendant -- Filigree, bending wire, hammering, forming, soldering, polishing.

3. Ring with cabochon setting - texturing with rolling mill, soldering, forming, bezel making, stone setting, polishing, patination

4. Independent study project

 

DESCRIPTION of SKILLS/TECHNIQUES/CONCEPTS TO BE LEARNED:

Students are taught:
1) about silversmithing equipment, tools and techniques
2) how to solder
3) how to make 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional pieces, including ring, pendant, and bracelet
4) how to create a bezel setting for a stone, and how to set a stone

 

CLASS TIME ESTIMATE:

This class involves four 3-hour sessions spread out over 2 weeks  (2 classes a week).   Homework is assigned as well.

CLASS FEE and DEPOSIT:

$400 fee/ $300 deposit
plus,
$55.00 Kit Fee (kit includes ss round wire, ss square wire, ss sheet, jump rings, solder, cabochon)
plus,
$15.00 Studio Fee

If the student wants additional sessions in the studio, beyond the 4 for this class, these are charged at $30.00 per session.

ADDITIONAL CLASS COSTS PER STUDENT:

Be Dazzled Beads provides the tools and equipment.

It is suggested, however, that students, if they do not own one, purchase a jeweler's saw and blades.   There is homework assigned and the student will need a saw for this.   The student can purchase these from Be Dazzled Beads for $25.00.

At the beginning of this class, the typical student should be able to do/know the following: No previous experience necessary.
At the end of this class, the typical student should be able to achieve/accomplish/learn the following: Use basic silversmithing tools to cut, shape, fashion, solder, finish metal sheet and wire in attractive jewelry pieces and objects.
