GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Students will learn to make appropriate decisions about straps and fringes which will complement their beadwork in proportion, weight, color, material, and theme.
DESCRIPTION of MAJOR PROJECTS/TASKS: The instructor will illustrate the principles of design while showing pieces of beadwork and photographs of beadwork.  Students will be asked to discuss what is "right" and what is "wrong", and what could be done to change or improve the example.  Students will practice various strap and fringe techniques on a sample square of beadwork to be completed before class time.

Students must complete a 3"x3" sample of flat beadwork prior to the class session.  This sample should be in the student's choice of loom or off-loom weaving made with beads no larger than 11/0's.

Straps and fringes are design components, that when added to a piece, should fit with the overall design of the piece and goals of the bead-artist.  This classes introduces the student to design considerations when using straps and fringes as embellishment components in a piece.
The first class hour will consist of demonstrations of design principles with student participation in discussion.  During the second hour, students will try different strap and fringe techniques, such as twisted fringe, kinky fringe, branch fringe, etc.

This design-oriented course is considered a mid-level core course for the beadweaving curriculum, including peyote, loom and brick.

At the beginning of this class, the typical student should be able to do/know the following: - use needle and thread
- be able to produce a 3"x3" square of beadweaving in the stitch of the student's choice
- be able to add thread in a beadweaving project
- be able to follow a pattern
At the end of this class, the typical student should be able to achieve/accomplish/learn the following: - appropriate elements for selecting fringe and strap elements
- how to attach straps and fringes
- various strap and fringe techniques

Beads for fringe and straps: delicas, seed beads, fringe beads, such as drops, daggers, leaves, etc.   Students should raid their own stash of beads.
