Learn the mechanics of felting
Learn to create felted buttons
Learn to embellish the buttons with beads

 

 

DESCRIPTION of MAJOR PROJECTS/TASKS:

Felting solid wool forms
Encasing pre-made buttons and other objects in flet
Creating felted bezels to reveal the encased object's surface
Felting shanks for attaching buttons to garments
Learning methods for creating detailed surface design thru felting, stitching and beading

6 hour workshop with lunch break

ADDITIONAL CLASS COSTS PER STUDENT:

Instructor will sell a variety of waxed linen by the yard.
Students will need seed beads, delicas or other small beads for embellishment, as well as Nymo D or C-Lon thread, beading needles, small sharp scissors or seam ripper, several buttons preferably 1" in diameter, a disposable razor, rubber gloves.

FIBER0101:  FELTED AND BEAD-EMBELLISHED BUTTONS

Class Description: Students will learn the mechanics of felting and create a handful of colorful, textured buttons using a variety of techniques. Instruction will include felting solid wool forms, encasing pre-made buttons and other objects in felt, creating felted bezels to reveal the encased object's surface, and felting shanks for attaching buttons to garments. Methods for creating detailed surface design will be explored through felting, stitching and beading.

Students will need to bring additional supplies as well. See the supply list on the website.

create surface designs using buttons
attach buttons to garments or jewelry pieces

$12.00 materials cost, includes a bag containing ample amounts of wool fleece in a variety of colors for the day's activities

Instructor will also sell a variety of colors of waxed linen by the yard.

Student will need to bring:
rubber gloves (to protect from constant moisture and soap while felting, and a rubber apron or clothes that can get wet and soapy.

pair of small scissors or a sharp seam ripper
several buttons preferably 1" in diamter
a disposable razor flro cleaning up the felted surface
beading thread (nymo D or C-Lon D)
beading needles (size 10 or 12)
beads for embellishing (11/0's, 15/0's, and delicas)
(may want to attach some larger beads as well)
a cabochon measure 3/4" or smaller for encasing in seed beads on the surface of the felted button
OPTIONAL: embroidery thread, waxed linen, and needles that coordinate

soap, vinegar, water bowls, felting mats, towels
