Learn to take a piece of fabric and turn it into a virtual heirloom. Make a pillow that looks like $100 pillow utilizing beads, knitting yarn, ribbon, and decorative stitches on your machine. Remember when you admired the old antique samplers. Now, you may make one in just hours using your sewing machine and of course it is framable.

Supply List

1) 1/2 yard fabric of choice. Preferably material that is a strip or plaid. If you wish to draw your own lines,, you may do so with an air erase pen. Examples: Linen, Silk Dupioni, Drapery Fabric (light weight or pillow weight) and denim.

2) Machine embroidery thread in one to three colors that match the fabric to be used. You may use metallic thread only if you know it is a very strong thread and does not break easily. White bobbin thread for machine embroidry.

3) 1/2 yard of venice trim, ribbon, lace, etc. to place in center of piece. This piece acts like a ruler in making the rows of decorative stitches.

4) Other items: several colors of silk ribbon -- the kind you do silk ribbon embroidery with, beads, very small mother of pearl buttons, and/or any decorative accents that you wish to use.

(Be sure to buy ample to go across an 18" piece.) You may buy your accents after making your decorative rows. (If you wish to purchase silk ribbon, you will need a pack of silk ribbon needles preferably with multiple sizes in the pack). You may have your mother's or grandmother antqiue laces and trims that you want to use. (You want this to be an heirloom piece to hand down).

5) 16" to 18" pillow form. (Be sure to cut fabric for the size pillow you want.) Allow extra as the decorative stitches take up more fabric.

6) You will need stabilizer to iron on to the back of your fabric. This is the same type of stabilizer that is used for machine embroidery.

PREPARATION:
No preparation is necessary unless you want your piece to have a machine embroidered initial or a name at the top or in the center. You must bring that to class already done.

If you wish the piece to become a sampler that you frame, then you may want to make the piece more rectangular before sewing.

Equipment: We have 1 sewing machine that has at least 16 or more decorative stitches available for use during class. You may also bring your own machine.
Several sharp needles (the type you do machine embroidery with) Wing needles make very pretty sttiches if you wish to use one. Check your instruction book to see if you have the decorative stitches to use a wing needle.
