GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: To teach the student the basics of working with, firing, and finishing precious metal clay
DESCRIPTION of MAJOR PROJECTS/TASKS:

Create a slide penant, and matching flat slab earrings or other piece using a slab technique.

DESCRIPTION of SKILLS/TECHNIQUES/CONCEPTS TO BE LEARNED:

- learn what precious metal clay is, and the different types of PMC/PMC+
- learn about the tools and equipment needed to work with PMC/PMC+, their care and storage
- learn how to properly fire PMC+
- learn how to finish PMC+ pieces
- make a slide pendant
- make slab earrings (or similar project)

CLASS TIME ESTIMATE: 4-5 hours

Student may want to purchase a cubic zirconia stone to embellish their piece with.    These cost between $3.00 and $9.00, and are available at Be Dazzled Beads.

CLAYMT4001:  GETTING STARTED WITH METAL CLAY

Participants will learn the basic techniques in silver jewelry making using Silver Clay (PMC+).   Students will demonstrate understanding and techniques as
- use/incorporate art syringe type and paste type with clay type
- care and storage of materials
- tool use, rolling even slab, cutting
- slip creation and use with cracking or breakage
- syringe creation and use
- textural impressions and pattern use
- finishing: proper drying and fine finishing in the dry clay state
- re-moistening or reconstituting techniques
- firing procedures and time
- polishing with wire brush and burnisher

Upon completion of this class, students will have one or more finished pieces.

At the beginning of this class, the typical student should be able to do/know the following: Students should want to learn about creating fine silver jewelry and artwork.
At the end of this class, the typical student should be able to achieve/accomplish/learn the following: Work with lump type and syringe type PMC+
Properly fire PMC+ and safely operate a kiln
Properly finish PMC+

If not purchasing the kit, students will need the 20 grams Clay Type, one tip-Syringe type.

HOW OFTEN COURSE OFFERED: Twice a month
PMC+ clay firing:   Anyone who has taken a metal clay class at Be Dazzled Beads or through the Center for Beadwork & Jewelry Arts, may fire up to 3 small pieces each week at no charge, and may fire additional pieces at a charge of $1.00 per piece.   Larger pieces will be charged $1.00 per piece.     Anyone who has purchased their PMC+ clay at Be Dazzled Beads may fire up to 3 pieces free each week.     While Be Dazzled and CBJA will take great care of your pieces, as green ware prior to firing, and during and after firing, neither Be Dazzled Beads nor CBJA will be responsible for any damage or breakage to your pieces, or if they are lost or stolen.    You may also tumble these pieces at a cost of $1.00 per piece.     Pieces are fired every Thursday morning.
