GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

Students will work a loom project in three dimensions, and learn to embellish a flat loomed base to make a bracelet.


Students will have the opportunity to:

o Compute measurements of components of piece to ensure proper fit of bracelet

o Warp loom for size of beads to be used

o Weave on a loom using seed beads

o Work with various sized seed beads

o Bead fringe embellishment

o Create a beaded bracelet closure

DESCRIPTION of MAJOR PROJECTS/TASKS: Loomed and embellished beaded bracelet
DESCRIPTION of SKILLS/TECHNIQUES/CONCEPTS TO BE LEARNED:

- Computing measurements of components to ensure proper fit of bracelet

- Warping loom for the size beads to be used

- Weaving technique for proper drape of piece

- Selecting fringe to complement beads and desired effect

- Creating clasp and loop from beads

CLASS TIME ESTIMATE: 3 hours:
- Day 1:  2 hours
- At home:  complete weaving and embellishment
- Day 2 (following week): 1 hour

Students will create a treasure bracelet using both a loom.   The object here is to further develop the student's looming skills, and to show how a flat loomed piece may be embellished to create a wonderful three-dimensional piece of jewelry.

Students will learn:
- Computing measurements of components to ensure proper fit of bracelet
- Warping loom for the size beads to be used
- Weaving technique for proper drape of piece
- Selecting fringe to complement beads and desired effect
- Creating clasp and loop from beads

At the beginning of this class, the typical student should be able to do/know the following:

o How to warp a loom
o Appropriate thread and needles to use in a loomed bead project
o Types of beads
o How to bead weave on a loom
o How to weave and knot warp and waft threads to complete a loomed piece
o How to add thread in a loomed piece

At the end of this class, the typical student should be able to achieve/accomplish/learn the following:

By the end of this workshop students should be able to:

o Warp a loom for the size beads to be woven
o Use weaving technique for proper drape of piece
o Select fringe to complement beads and desired effect

Supply List - loom with minimum 8" length of weaving surface   
(NOTE: the inexpensive metal beading loom will not work for this class -- you will need a larger loom)
- cloth measuring tape
- 6" metal ruler (optional)
- 1 Bead or Button -- min. diameter 15mm or 5/8" (does not have to be round) (clasp)
- Nymo thread size D in color coordinating with beads
- 8/0 seed beads -- 3.5 grams (for base of bracelet)
- 11/0 seed beads  - 1 hand or 34 grams (fringe)
- 6/0 seed beads or larger, or 4mm and larger beads for "treasures" on fringe
- Beading needles  (size 12 is good)
- Scissors
- Divided bead tray and/or work surface
- Pencil or Pen
