GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

Students will be introduced to working with thread and needle, learn about various types of beads and beading threads and needles, and how to choose which types of needles and threads to use for different projects;  how to control the  thread tension within the work, using wax vs. conditioners; begin to learn an assortment of basic bead weaving stitches; be introduced to working with a pattern.   As a project, students will make a very simple amulet purse using size 8/0 delica beads and the peyote stitch.

DESCRIPTION of SKILLS/TECHNIQUES/CONCEPTS TO BE LEARNED: - learn the types of various beading threads available and when to use them
- learn about the various beading needles available and when to use them
- learn to wax thread correctly and reasons why to do so
- begin to learn some of the major bead weaving stitches
- learn about tension and how this affects the piece

BW2001:  BASICS OF BEAD WEAVING

In this introductory beadweaving class, the major goal is to introduce the student to strategies and techniques for managing thread tension.   With any stitch, "thread tension" is one of the first and foremost variables the bead-weaver needs to manage, in order to have a successful outcome in their project.

Students will an assortment of basic bead weaving stitches. Students will be introduced to various types of beading threads and needles and their history.  Students will learn how to wax thread and the benefits of doing this.   Students will be introduced to reading a pattern that has been graphed.  

Students will make a simple amulet purse using size 8/0 delica beads and the peyote stitch.

This class is considered a Core Course, and is a prerequisite for most of the other Bead Weaving (loom, peyote, brick, other stitches) courses at the CBJA.
