BS0003: Pearl Knotting

SKILL SET AREA: Bead Stringing
PREREQUISITES: None
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: To teach how to string pearls by tying knots between each bead
DESCRIPTION of MAJOR PROJECTS/TASKS: necklace of knotted strung pearls
DESCRIPTION of SKILLS/TECHNIQUES/CONCEPTS TO BE LEARNED: 1.  Learn to knot pearls using two silk cords
2.  Learn to attach a pearl clasp
3.  Discuss adding gemstones, silver, crystals, or other accent beads to pearls
4.  Learn how to finish off a pearl necklace
5.  Learn when it is appropirate to knot a piece

Students will learn to make and finish off a knotted pearl necklace or bracelet using 2 silk cords.  The student will gain the knowledge of when it is advantageous to use pearl knotting and why.

At the beginning of this class, the typical student should be able to do/know the following: Love pearls.
At the end of this class, the typical student should be able to achieve/accomplish/learn the following:

The student should come away from the class able to complete a knotted pearl necklace with the knotting resting snugly against the pearls.  

The student will gain the knowledge of when it is advantageous to use pearl knotting and why.

Supply List

1 strand - freshwater pearls (any size/shape you like) or cultured pearls. You may also use glass beads or gemstones beads, if you prefer.

Silk bead cord (with a needle attached on one end) in a complementary color, size 1 or 2 for pearls, 4-6 (or thicker size) for glass beads.

Twisted wire needle (one with a collapsable head), "fine" size for pearls; "medium" if using czech glass beads

single strand pearl clasp

2 "T" pins (provided at class)

necklace foam work board covered by fabric, or padded jewelry board (provided at class)
